Snow line

The snow line is the point above which, or poleward of which, snow and ice cover the ground throughout the year.

The interplay of altitude and latitude affect the precise placement of the snow line at a particular location. At or near the equator, it is typically situated at approximately 4,500 meters (or about 15,000 feet) above sea level. As one moves towards the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, the parameter at first increases: in the Himalayas the permanent snow line can be as high as 5,700 metres (18,700 feet). Beyond the Tropics the snow line becomes progressively lower as the latitude increases, falling all the way to sea level itself near the poles.

In addition, the relative location of a mountain to the nearest coastline can be a factor in how high the snow line would be; a peak near a coast — especially the west coast — of a continent might have a lower snow line than one of the same height and at the same latitude situated in a landmass interior, because the average summer temperature of the surrounding lowlands would be warmer in the latter spot than in the former, thus making a higher altitude necessary to keep the snow from melting in the summer.

Harvey Samuel Firestone

Harvey Samuel Firestone (December 20 1868 – February 7, 1938) was the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, one of the first global makers of automobile tires and an important contributor to North American economic growth in the 20th century.

Biography

Firestone was born in his family’s farm house on December 20 1868 in the small town of Columbiana, Ohio, the second of three children, to Benjamin Firestone, a farmer, and A. Catherine Flickinger. The Firestone ancestors were German immigrants named Feuerstein.[1] After graduating from Columbiana High School, Firestone worked for the Columbus Buggy Company in Columbus, Ohio before starting his own company in 1890, making rubber tires for carriages. In 1895 he married Idabelle Smith. They had six children: Harvey S. Firestone, Jr., Russell A. Firestone, Leonard Firestone, Raymond Firestone, Roger Stanley Firestone, and Elizabeth Firestone. In 1904 Firestone joined Henry Ford to make rubber tires for the newly popular automobiles. The Ford-Firestone corporate marriage was later cemented when Henry’s grandson William Clay Ford wed Martha Firestone, granddaughter of Harvey, who then became parents of current Ford Motor Company Chairman, William Clay Ford, Jr. The farmhouse where Firestone was born is now located in Greenfield Village (Dearborn, MI), a 90-acre historical site founded by Henry Ford.

Firestone was concerned both with the manufacture of tires and with securing supplies of rubber from trees: At one point, the company had a rubber plantation in Liberia that covered more than 4,000 square kilometers (1 million acres). During World War II the company was called on by the U.S. Government to make artillery shells, aluminum kegs for food transport and other rubberized military products.

Death

In 1938, Firestone died peacefully at his vacation home in Miami Beach, Florida at the age of 69.

The Millionaires Club

Firestone, Ford and Thomas Edison were generally considered the three leaders in American industry at the time, and often worked and vacationed together. All three were part of a very exclusive group titled “The Millionaires Club” . This was a true gentlemen’s club where one would call another in the appropriate city and ask him to purchase a building or other items for them without so much as a handshake, merely on his word.

Honors

The main library of Princeton University is named Firestone Library in his honor. It is among the largest university libraries in the world.
In 1973, Firestone was posthumously inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame. Firestone High School in Akron, Ohio is named in his honor. He also has a memorial there.

Snow Advisory

A Snow Advisory is issued by the National Weather Service of the United States when a low pressure system produces snow that may cause a significant pain in the ass, but does not meet warning criteria. The advisory criteria varies from area to area. Snow advisories are typically issued only when a storm system is expected to only produce snow in the advised area. Depending on the amount of snow that is expected, a Heavy Snow Warning can be issued for similar times, but when larger amounts of snow are expected. The exact border between a snow advisory and heavy snow warning varies throughout the country. If other forms of wintry precipitation are expected, then a Winter Weather Advisory or winter storm warning can be issued, also depending on the amount of precipitation that is expected.

Trunk (motorcycle)

A motorcycle trunk is a storage compartment in the vicinity of the seat, often complimenting panniers or saddlebags. A trunk mounted above and to the rear of the seat may be called a top box or a top case. Some are fitted with electric lighting systems for enhanced safety, and a backrest for a passenger. Trunk may also refer to the under-seat storage space built into a motorcycle or scooter.

A trunk can be built-in on some models such as the Honda Goldwing or BMW K1200LT, but it may be added by the owner after or as a part of purchase.

Harley-Davidson riders often call a Harley’s trunk a “tour pack”.

Denver Underground Film Festival

The Denver Underground Film Festival premiered in 1997 at The Bug Theater in Denver, Colorado.
Since then, the visions of hundreds of independent filmmakers from around the world have been showcased, including films by classic Experimental and Avant-Garde filmmakers like Stan Brakhage, Luis Buñuel, Fassbinder and Man Ray.

2007 DUFF

The 2007 Denver Underground Film Festival will take place September 21-22 at the Starz Filmcenter in Denver Colorado.

1994 Winter Olympics medal count

This is the full table of the medal count of the 1994 Winter Olympics, which were held in Lillehammer, Norway. These rankings sort by the number of gold medals earned by a country. The number of silvers is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically. This follows the system used by the IOC, IAAF and BBC.

Note, the IOC does not officially recognize global ranking per country.

Nexen Tire is a tire manufacturer, headquartered in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, and Seoul, both in South Korea. Its major domestic competitors are Hankook Tire and Kumho Tires. The company’s name is reflected in the company slogan, “Next Century Tire.”

Self belay

In mountaineering, a climber can employ a self-belay with an ice axe to prevent a slide down a snow-covered slope. To use an ice axe to self belay, a climber will hold the axe by the head in the climber’s uphill hand. As the climber moves up the slope, the climber will push the shaft of the axe several inches into the snow with every other step. If the axe is set firmly enough, it will aid in preventing a slip from becoming a fall. If a slip occurs, the climber presses down on the head of the axe causing the shaft to sink deeper into the snow, anchoring the climber. If this method is unsuccessful, the climber may fall and slide down the slope having to rely on a technique called a self-arrest.

Tire load sensitivity

Tire load sensitivity describes the behaviour of tires under load. Conventional pneumatic tires do not behave as classical friction theory would suggest. Friction theory says that the maximum horizontal force developed should be proportional to the vertical load on the tire. In practice, the maximum horizontal force Fy that can be generated is proportional, roughly, to the vertical load Fz raised to the power of somewhere between 0.7 and 0.9, typically.

Production car tires typically develop this maximum lateral force at a slip angle of 6-10 degrees, although this angle increases as the vertical load on the tire increases. The same sensitivity is typically seen in the longitudinal forces, and combined lateral and longitudinal slip.
